Refusing to Allow Trauma to Inform Your Parenting–

Gone are the days when trauma suffices to inform my marriage, my parenting, my home in general. I’ve been there, done that.

“My dad did this, so I’m going to make sure I do that.”

“I’m going to make sure I’m nothing like *insert person*”

If our highest and best is simply not doing what was done to us, is that really a vision that will put wind in our sails?

What about when the smallest of tendencies mimicks the person you’re trying to do the opposite of? Wouldn’t it crush you if that was your entire plan?

If the essence of who I am as a wife and a mother rises and falls on who and what i’m NOT going to be, what kind of culture is that?

We need Holy Spirit vision lighting the paths of our homes. We need the Word of God inspiring us into life-giving parenting, not wrong parenting hopefully inspiring us into “better parenting.” We need supernatural insight into the very way the Holy Spirit designed each member of our family, and how to steward them well. We need vision casting sessions with our husbands, chatting out exactly the type of spiritual footprint we want to have in our communities. As a family, what are our gifts and talents? Are we a family of hospitality? Radical generosity? Mission work?

What do fully equipped and empowered children look like, and what needs to happen right now in this season to work towards that? Are we as parents walking fully equipped? Do our days reflect the “Come and See” lifestyle that Jesus lived? If not, what needs to change?

Let’s raise our expectations of what God can do in the span of one generation, yes? Though you came from lies, abuse, disfunction and chaos, your home can absolutely be a home of Presence, peace, power and joy, all because of Christ in you, the hope of Glory!

So, no longer will we cast vision rooted in fear. Nope- we will cast visio as completely new creations in Christ Jesus, free from all bondage, filled with His Spirit, one with the Trinity! Believe me when I say- your home was made for nothing less. Victory, not victimhood, is what defines us. May we dream with God for our families from THIS place.

Forever following The Way,

Jada
